The Boston Public Library opened this Boylston Station Reading Room for the convenience of railroad travelers in 1905. The facility occupied a portion of the ground floor of the railroad station. The reading room was enhanced in 1927 and became known as the Boylston Branch. In 1935 the current Connolly Branch Library on Centre Steet was opened. The entrance to the station and the reading room was by a walkway at the same location as a currently existing sidewalk that runs down the right side of the current Boylston Street MBTA Orange Line station.
