This photograph was probably produced as part of an advertising campaign to trumpet newly introduced street cars with new braking systems that were much more effective than the systems on street cars previously in use. In this posed photograph, a boy runs out in front of the street car and the conductor is shown swinging around the handle of the "safety brake" to bring the car to a rapid stop. The photograph was taken on South St. in Jamaica Plain. The placard on the street card indicates its terminus at Forest Hills Station.
